  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs basil, oregano, thyme

How to Make Homemade Lasagna

The first thing you need to do is prepare the noodles: Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until completely tender. Drain them and place them on a clean surface or baking paper to prevent them from sticking.

Now, prepare the sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened. Add the garlic and ground beef, breaking up the beef as it cooks. Once the beef is browned, add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, herbs, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Then prepare the cheese mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, beaten egg, and half the Parmesan cheese. Mix well until smooth and creamy. This will help bind the lasagna and give it a rich, cheesy flavor.

Arrange the lasagna layers: Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F). In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Add a layer of pasta (about 4 pieces), slightly overlapping them. Spread a layer of the ricotta mixture, then sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Add more meat sauce on top. Repeat this process until you have three or four layers. Finish by layering the pasta on top, followed by the sauce, followed by plenty of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Now you can bake the lasagna: Cover the dish with aluminum foil to prevent the cheese from burning, and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and bubbling.
